If you have been approved for or are receiving SSD benefits it is possible to attempt to return to work on a trial basis. This is called a trial work period or TWP. You may continue to collect SSD benefits while working for a total of 9 months within a “rolling” 60-month time frame. The 9 months do not need to be back to back.
Social Security will consider that you have worked during a month if your gross earnings are in excess of $700.00 or if you work more than 80 hours per month in your own business.
In order to continue to collect SSD benefits during your trial work period, you must report your work activity to your local SSA office.
