Payment Of Back Due SSI Benefits

August 12, 2010 By Paul Giannetti

If you have been awarded SSI disability benefits and you are owed back payments that are more than three times the maximum monthly benefit amount, these back benefits will be paid in three separate monthly installments, 6 months apart.

The first two of these monthly installments cannot exceed three times the maximum monthly benefit amount. However, if there are remaining benefits owed, the entire amount will be paid in the third installment, 6 months later.

There are special rules that may allow increased installment amounts if it can be demonstrated that there are outstanding debts due to medical treatment, food, or clothing. However, a special review process will be undertaken by the Social Security Administration in order to determine whether or not you qualify for the increased installment payments.
