What Is An Umbrella Policy?

May 26, 2011 By Paul Giannetti

In our Albany, NY accident/injury law firm, we are keenly aware of the importance of having ample and sufficient insurance coverage.  We see time and time again, injury victims who can’t be adequately compensated because the negligent party has insufficient coverage.

In some instances, we often see a defendant with insufficient liability coverage become the subject of a legal judgment.  This could force that person into bankruptcy and also result in garnishment of future wages.

An umbrella policy can protect you if you are sued and a judgment is entered against you for an amount in excess of your car or homeowners insurance limits.

A personal umbrella policy is added to your auto or home insurance and protects you in the event that you are sued and your auto or home policy are not sufficient to cover the claim.  When this happens the umbrella policy will cover you for an additional amount, possibly saving your home and other personal assets from being taken.
